The manta ray in this photo shows a prolapsed rectum. Manta rays are able to expel and retract their rectums as a way to possibly clean out their digestive tract. Smaller fish often take the opportunity to clean the rectum of detritus as well. “Okole” in Hawaiian means anus or buttocks. This photo was taken in the 1980’s by Jeff Leicher during a day dive in the Red Hill dive site area on the Kona Coast.
