This ray is a large male manta with long slender claspers. Seen at the Kona Surf site during the last week of May 1997. He seemed shy at first but during the course of the week started approaching divers more closely. On the nights of May 26th and 28th, red raw areas were observed on the underside of his cephalic fins and between his first and second gills. Perhaps this was caused by mating. Because of his wide wing span, he was named ‘Iwa, the Hawaiian word for the Frigate bird. |
