Kong is a large male manta ray first identified at the Kona Surf site on August 23, 1995. At that time, he was very shy of divers and fled when approached. We noticed then that the underside of his cephalic fins and the forward area of his chest were scuffed red and were probably sore. His size of over 12’ across and his large claspers that extend well past his pelvic fins, suggests he is a mature male. He was named Kong by dive guide Kimo Santos because of his large size. |
