Stubby
is a young male manta ray first identified on June 1, 1996 as he slowly swam by
a group of divers during the day off of Red Hill on the Kona Coast of Hawaii.
He has a missing left cephalic fin and all that remains is a stub shown in the
above right photograph. Without this cephalic fin to help funnel food and water
into his mouth, Stubby is another feeding challenged manta ray. He has been seen
several times on the night dive at the Kona Surf site taking advantage of the
easy feeding opportunity.
