Bob Jensen spotted this manta in 2006 off of Vito's while diving with his wife and a friend. You can see that she has a hook and line around her left cephalic fin. Keniki is Hawaiian for Denise and is named after Bob's wife and dive buddy.
UPDATE: At the time it was first identified, Keniki was a young manta (pup), not sexually mature and therefore identified as a female. In September 2009 however, we received new photos and she is actually a he! Now, 3.5 years later, Keniki's claspers have started to appear as seen in the photo at left so Keniki is now listed as a male manta. |
