Baby Huey joined the Kona Manta Ray Night
Dive in October 1994 when he was approximately 4'-5' across and his claspers were
only an inch long. Baby manta rays are approximately 3' across when born. Baby
Huey was the first baby to join the adult regulars and the first ray recognized
as a young male by the size of his claspers. He swam very fast and often times
ran into the other larger mantas. Because he seemed young and clumsy we called
him Baby Huey. In no time at all, the older rays were teaching him the proper
feeding etiquette by what seemed like swats on the head from larger female rays
such as Lefty, W and Elvis. Baby Huey was seen almost every night until January
1996 and by then he was about 5-6' across. We watched him grow and that's exciting
to see.
