Kanoa was first sighted on August 17, 2002 at the Ho'ona Bay/Garden Eels site. She was first identified in the summer of 2002 along with four other new manta identifications when manta sightings on the Kona Manta Ray Night Dive were high. Kanoa means "the free one" in Hawaiian.
