This ray is named after the wife of King Kamehameha the Great. Queen Kaahumanu helped rule the Hawaiian Islands from 1851 to 1883. Kaahumanu, the manta ray, is a large female, about 10’ across. She was first seen at the Kona Surf site on the night of July 7, 1997. She was slow and deliberate as she passed through the thick clouds of plankton attracted to the divers’ lights. |
