Calamity Jane is easily identified by her “bumps and bruises”. Her left cephalic fin bends out and to the left and seems to have little or no dexterity. She has a scar on the underside of her left pectoral fin and her tail is very short. Her left eye seems cloudy and she may be visually impaired. She was first sighted at Ho’ona Bay/Garden Eel cove on August 17, 2001. She was very shy and never approached the divers or other manta rays. She swam around the outside of the circle. On April 12, 2002, she returned to Ho’ona Bay on the Kona Manta Ray Night Dive. On that night she eventually joined the divers and another manta ray feeding. She now easily joins the center of the feeding circle. |
